Welcome to Uptown Squirrel. I'm livin' in my Uptown world, etc.
I've loved Uptown for years. I grew up in South Minneapolis near Minnehaha Creek and as a teenager loved to go to Uptown in the late '70s and early '80s. The Suburban World still showed movies. Tatters was in a store front where Calhoun Square now stands. Morris and Christie's was a cool neighborhood bodega and the Rainbow Bar was a relaxing place to have a beer.
All in all, Uptown has handled its growing pains quite well. The Uptown Theater is still showing quality indy movies. Williams Pub has only gone through a minor renovation and quite a few new unique restaurants and shops have become established landmarks in the bustling neighborhood. But when we have American Eagle and possibly a Best Buy, it really busts my nuts.
Uptown is in danger of becoming UpDale.
